On-Demand Training & MCLE: Webinars

The Children’s Commission promotes child welfare-related legal education by providing online CLE content generated by the Commission; by producing child welfare law-related CLE in partnership with various stakeholders, including TexasBarCLE; and by obtaining Texas Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE), and Texas Board of Legal Specialization (TBLS) credit for continuing legal education both in Texas and occasionally from other jurisdictions.

These CLEs are offered “on demand” on the Commission website at no cost for judges and attorneys. Additionally, some CLE courses may be eligible for Judicial Family Violence credit hours. Some jurisdictions may consider these offerings to meet the statutory three-hour education requirements in Texas Family Code Sections 107.004 and 107.0131 for attorneys to qualify for court appointments on child protection dockets or to qualify to remain on a court-appointed list. These offerings may also be considered to meet statutory required trauma-informed training hours. The determination of whether a CLE offering meets the statutorily requirements for trauma-informed training or to receive appointments and/or to qualify to remain on a court-appointment list for child welfare cases is at the discretion of the attorney’s appointing judge.

September Webinar: Caregivers in Court: Notice and Engagement

The Children’s Commission will host a webinar on Monday, September 28, 2026 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. entitled “Caregivers in Court: Notice and Engagement.”

The webinar will feature Hon. Cheryl Vaughan, Associate Judge of the Child Protection Court Eighth Region North in Gainesville, Courtney Pardue Wheeler, Attorney of the Pardue Law Firm, and Zachary Haston, foster parent and 2nd VP with the Texas Foster Family Association. The webinar will address the legal framework governing caregiver notice and engagement; include practical insights from the bench, bar, and caregiver perspectives; and explore effective approaches to engaging caregivers in child welfare court proceedings.

Tuesday, October 6, 2026

12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.

The Children’s Commission will host a webinar on Tuesday, October 6, 2026 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. entitled “Dynamics of Family Violence & Considerations for Child Welfare Cases.”

The webinar will be presented by Barbra Grimmer, Policy Coordinator at the Texas Council on Family Violence. The session will address the prevalence of family violence and the array of family violence services, as well as the impact of family violence on survivors and on children. The presentation will also review protective actions of survivor parents in the context of child welfare cases as well as tactics that abusive parties may use in the courtroom. Finally, judges will learn strategies for responding to family violence dynamics in the courtroom and in final orders.

MCLE credit, including family violence credit, is pending. This presentation will be archived, and materials will be available on the Children’s Commission website following the live webinar.
